Dental sedation refers to medication designed to reduce physical pain associated with dental treatments or to reduce anxiety and help patients feel more relaxed during the procedure. This makes the experience more pleasant and ensures dental staff can perform their duties more effectively. We offer two types of sedation: nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas) and oral sedation.

Nitrous oxide is the most minimal form of sedation, which is easily administered through a small mask that dispenses a combination of nitrous oxide and oxygen. This leaves patients feeling relaxed during the dental procedure.

Nitrous Oxide vs. Oral Conscious Sedation: Understanding Your Options for Relaxation

When it comes to easing anxiety during dental procedures, both nitrous oxide (commonly known as laughing gas) and oral conscious sedation are effective options. Here’s how they differ:

Nitrous Oxide: (Minimal Sedation) Is administered through a small mask placed over your nose, nitrous oxide provides a gentle, calming effect during your dental procedure. It works quickly, helping you relax without putting you to sleep, and the effects wear off almost immediately after the procedure ends, allowing you to drive yourself home. It’s ideal for patients with mild anxiety or those undergoing shorter procedures.

Oral Conscious Sedation: (Moderate Sedation) For patients with higher levels of fear or anxiety, oral conscious sedation involves taking a prescribed pill at night and 1 hour before your next day morning appointment. It takes effect gradually and provides a deeper level of relaxation, helping you feel calm, comfort, and at ease throughout the procedure.

While you’ll remain awake and able to respond to your dentist, you’ll feel deeply relaxed and may have little to no memory of the procedure afterward. Your dentist will discuss your needs and customize the sedation plan to ensure the best experience.

Unlike nitrous oxide, the effects of oral sedation last longer, so you’ll need someone to drive you home afterward. (DOES REQUIRE A DRIVER OR ESCORT)

Both options are safe and tailored to your needs, ensuring you feel comfortable during your visit. Your dentist will discuss which method is best for you based on your anxiety level and the type of treatment you’re receiving.
